Mehdia is a widow with 3 children who fled Iraq to become refugees in
Amman, Jordan. Her youngest and only son, Karar, is 10 years old and
attends school. She has a young daughter, Shireen, age 16.
Her adult daughter, Nagham, has 2 children - a daughter: Zahra'a - age
11, and a son, Sajad, who is 8 years old and attends school. Nagham's
husband was killed in Iraq and she is also a widow.
The two families had been supported by Mehdia's brothers-in-law, but they
have received nothing from them for over 3 months. Mehdia is desperate
to find a way to support her children and grandchildren.
When asked what she needed, Mehdia said that if she had a sewing
machine, she could work at home to support her family and help to pay for
the children to go to school.
The cost to provide Mehdia with a sewing machine, basic
supplies and some fabric to begin her cottage industry is $362

PROJECT # 2 Will you help Um Luay and her daughters get started with a cottage industry, making pickles?
|
Um Luay and her three daughters
|
Um Luay has three handicapped adult daughters that she cares for.
Her daughters - aged 28, 30 and 32 - have a genetic disease that
that causes deterioration of their muscles. They are now getting
free physiotherapy in Amman but there has been no improvement in
their condition. Um Luay sometimes can find some work in a bakery
and she makes fine pickles. She told our Amman consultant that
she is tired and would like to work at home, making her pickles and
where she can care for her daughters.
It only will cost $189 to set Um Luay up with jars and supplies
so that she can make her pickles and market them locally
Can you help this family?
PROJECT # 3 Um Layla needs a sewing machine and sewing supplies - Will you help her?

Um Layla and her daughter
They have requested that their picture be blurred so that they are not recognizable because, without legal residency and despite being registered with the UNHCR, Iraqis live in constant and
reasonable fear of deportation back into Iraq. Many do not leave their homes unless absolutely necessary to avoid this risk. (We at the CRP have a clear photo and copies of this family's UNHCR
registration.)
Um Layla is in her late 30's and is married. Her husband is diabled, having lost his
leg in the Iraq-Iran war. Um Layla has great love for her husband and tears well in
her eyes when she speaks of how good of a man he is. Her husband has an
artificial leg but it is broken. The couple has three children - a daughter 18yrs, and
two sons, 11 and 16 yrs old. None of the children have been able to attend school
in Amman.
Um Layla would like to have a sewing machine and some basic sewing supplies so
that she can sew school uniforms and children's clothing for people in her
neighborhood.
It will cost $362 to purchase the sewing machine and supplies to begin Um
Layla's home sewing business.
Will you help this family regain some stability through cottage industry?

PROJECT # 4 Please help Um Zahra to get a stove so that she can support her family
|
Um Zahra is alone in Amman with her 4 children as her husband went to Sudan to see if perhap he can find employment there. This family left Iraq
because of the bad security conditions. Um Zahra's husband was threatened; her brother was killed; they faced bad times there. They have
been in Jordan for three months. They went to UNHCR and were given an appointment in September. She said "We have no income and we
need to put the kids in school"
Her children are:
Zahra : 17years (daughter)
Mohammed: 15 (son)
Amena: 10 (daughter)
Ameen : 9 (son)
When asked how we can help her, Um Zahra said that she can support her family if she had a stove so she could cook for a school, churches or
families. She is now cooking on a small propane tank (see photo)
A decent stove for Um Zahra to cook on and to use to support her family will cost $361 Please help this family
PROJECT # 5 Please help Um Ali get a new stove so she can resume cooking to support her family

Um Ali is 38 years old and her husband is 42 years old. They have three
children:
Ali , 16 years
Hanin, 15 years
Waiel, 6 years
This family fled to Jordan in 2002 as Zahra's brother was involved with
political activities and the Iraqi intelligence frequenly asked her about him.
Her husband decided to leave Iraq to protect his family. They have gone to
the UN office in Amman for the past 6 years to ask for asylum but with no
success. They have no legal residency, no right to work, but the kids were
able to attend public schools because the rules in 2002 were easier for
Iraqis then. Now she is worried about this next year because the children
may not be able to attend Jordanian public school because of the changing
rules.
Um Ali used to cook for the church or for her wealthy neighbors but she has
old and broken cooking oven. She needs new one and some new pans so
that she can resume supporting her family.
A new oven and pans for Um Ali will cost $361
Won't you please help?
