The Collateral Repair Project
in affiliation with the International Humanities Center

How We Work
The Collateral Repair Project is a grassroots effort, bringing Iraqis and coalition citizens together in order to create
solutions in response to the terrible damage done to Iraqi civilians because of the illegal and immoral invasion and
ongoing occupation of Iraq.  As such, we work in partnership with an Iraqi team who determines how we can best help
improve the stability of some of the millions of Iraqis whose lives have been devastated by the US led invasion.

Our Amman and Iraq teams are immersed in the refugee population there and have many trustworthy and valuable
contacts with humanitarian workers throughout Iraq.   Our team members meet with local refugees or IDP (internally
displaced persons) and representatives of Iraqi NGOs to determine what projects the Collateral Repair Project will
make available to you for your support.

These projects target needy Iraqis both internally displaced within Iraq or who are refugees outside of Iraq in a
neighboring country - most often Jordan.  Our team members interview prospective recipients to find out what their
needs are and carefully screen these prospective recipients to make certain that they will truly benefit from your
contributions and to see if they have any other resources.  We want to assure you that your assistance is genuinely
needed.

Some of the kind of projects recommended by our Amman team:

  • direct relief for an individual, family or group
  • grants for vocational training and/or supplies
  • creation of crafts cooperatives and support in marketing their handcrafts through fair trade companies
  • medical care
  • assistance for Iraqi children in accessing education
  • and more!

How projects are developed

The Amman team members notify us with prospective projects and about the potential recipients of these projects.
They send cost estimations for any necessary purchases.  They provide us with a detailed report on each individual /
family / group accompanied by photos - both of the prospective recipients and of their ID (passport / UNHCR
registration cards)

We then prepare a report for our "Current Projects" page to inform you about who you can help.

"Where does my contribution go?"

Almost all of your contributions go directly to the project you decide to help with.

Each project's total financial goal is determined by adding together these items:

  • actual cost of goods or services to go to the intended recipient

  • Fee to transfer funds to Amman or Iraq via Western Union or bank transfer for disbursement to our
teams to carry out our projects

  • Each project amount includes a stipend paid to our Iraqi team members to cover actual costs in preparing and
executing projects - ie: telephone, faxes, internet cafe use, photo processing, taxis to travel to families, etc.

This also provides them with compensation for their time and expertise.   The goal of the Collateral Repair Project is
to be able to provide our Iraqi team members in Amman with a monthly assured stipend of $500.  As they are also
refugees and living on very limited means, this will give them security and assure that the CRP retains them as team
members who can provide consistent and dedicated service to the Collateral Repair Project and the people it serves.

Our fiscal sponsor (International Humanities Center "
IHCenter") provides us with the ability to offer you the means to
make tax deductible contributions to the CRP.  IHCenter also provides us with a complete management of all monies
contributed to the CRP -- including, but not limited to book keeping and financial reports.  They transfer funds to our
Amman team for our projects.  They provide us with consultation and support for many aspects of our work.  For
these many benefits,
IHCenter charges 5% of all monies processed through them.  Donations made by credit card
have a 3% charge imposed by the credit card companies

  • To accommodate these two expenses, we just add an additional 10% to the first the first 3 items listed
above.  Any part of this that is over the 5% charged by IHCenter and that is not used by credit card fees is
held in reserve for basic minimal operating costs of the project such as printing costs for project-related
brochures or other small expenses related to the CRP.

Our North American team does not receive any financial compensation for our work
with the Collateral Repair Project.  We volunteer our time and talents.
